Weight loss injections are everywhere at the moment. Mounjaro, Wegovy, Ozempic, Retatrutide. Everyone has heard the names, plenty of people are using them and even more people are quietly thinking about them.
Yet nobody quite knows whether they are allowed to mention them in the gym without the protein shaker police turning up. So, let’s talk about them properly.
I’ll also be completely honest. As a personal trainer, admitting that I use weight loss medication might sound slightly hypocritical.
However, I have lost 45 lb over the past 18 months using Mounjaro alongside personal training and regular gym attendance. Despite spending much of that time running a cafe and being surrounded by food every day, I am now in the best shape and condition of my life.
Mounjaro has definitely helped me. But it did not lift a single weight, complete a workout or improve my fitness for me. That part came from training.
What are the benefits?
Let’s start with the good news, because there is plenty of it.
Finally losing weight
For a lot of people, this is the first time in years that the weight has actually started coming off. Not because they suddenly found willpower. Most people who have struggled with their weight have tried far harder than anyone gives them credit for. The medication quietens the constant hunger enough that a sensible plan finally has a chance to work.
Confidence
Seeing real progress for the first time in years changes how you feel about yourself. Clothes fit better. You catch yourself in a mirror and actually like what you see. You stop dodging photos. That confidence spills into everything else.
Feeling better every day
Carrying less weight makes everyday life easier. Stairs, walking the dog, playing with the kids, getting up off the floor. Many people notice more energy, better sleep and fewer aches in their knees, hips and back.
Real health benefits
Losing excess weight can bring down blood pressure, improve blood sugar and lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and joint problems. Some of these medicines were first developed to treat diabetes for exactly that reason.
Better sex
Yes, we said it. Feeling more confident in your own skin, having more energy and simply feeling better in yourself can make a real difference in the bedroom. Plenty of people find their sex life improves as the weight comes off.
Actually wanting to go to the gym
This is the one that matters most to us. When you have been stuck for years, the gym can feel pointless. Why put yourself through it when nothing ever changes?
But once you see yourself improving, something shifts. You want to protect that progress. You want to get stronger, move better and find out what else you are capable of.
For a lot of people, that is the moment the gym stops feeling like a punishment and becomes something they actually want to do. That is exactly where we come in.
Medication and movement can make a very good team
For the right person, medically prescribed weight loss medication can be a genuinely useful tool. It can quieten food noise, reduce hunger and make a calorie controlled diet feel far more manageable. Seeing progress can also provide the confidence to walk into a gym, become more active and begin doing things that previously felt out of reach.
There is absolutely no shame in getting help. We use medication to support all sorts of health conditions. Weight management does not suddenly become a moral test where everyone must struggle through it alone.
The important point is that the injection should be part of the plan, not the entire plan. The aim should not simply be to become lighter. It should be to become healthier, stronger, fitter and more confident.
What are the risks?
These medicines can have side effects and they are not suitable for everybody. Being open about the risks does not mean we are against them. It means we want people to use them responsibly.
Feeling sick, constipation, diarrhoea and stomach discomfort
These are among the side effects. Eating smaller meals, taking your time, avoiding very large or fatty meals and drinking regularly throughout the day can help. Speak to your prescriber if symptoms are persistent, severe or getting worse.
Dehydration
Vomiting, diarrhoea and simply forgetting to drink can leave you dehydrated, particularly when exercising. Keep fluids nearby, drink throughout the day and do not attempt a hard training session when you are unwell or unable to keep fluids down. Severe dehydration needs medical advice.
Losing muscle as well as fat
When body weight comes down quickly, some of that loss can be muscle. That is not what we want.
Regular resistance training, enough protein and a sensible rate of weight loss can all help preserve muscle. This is one of the biggest reasons why combining weight loss medication with the gym makes sense.
Not eating enough to train properly
A greatly reduced appetite can occasionally turn into very low food intake. That can mean tiredness, dizziness, poor recovery and disappointing workouts.
The goal is not to eat as little as humanly possible. It is to eat enough nutritious food to support your health while maintaining an appropriate calorie deficit. If you are regularly dizzy, weak or struggling to eat, speak to your prescriber.
Low blood sugar
The risk can be greater for people taking certain diabetes medicines alongside a GLP 1 medicine. This needs individual advice from your doctor, diabetes team or pharmacist. Your trainer should also know that you have diabetes and understand what to do if symptoms appear during exercise.
Gallbladder problems and pancreatitis
These are less common but potentially serious risks. Severe and persistent stomach pain, particularly pain spreading into the back with sickness or vomiting, requires urgent medical attention.
This is not something to solve with more water, a protein shake or a gentle walk on the treadmill.
Pregnancy, contraception and surgery
These medicines are not suitable during pregnancy. Mounjaro may also affect how well the contraceptive pill works for a period after starting treatment or increasing the dose.
Anyone planning surgery or a procedure involving sedation should tell their medical team that they are using a GLP 1 medicine. These are conversations for your doctor, prescriber or pharmacist.
Where it comes from matters
There are now lots of websites offering weight loss medication, and knowing which ones are legitimate can be confusing. Your first conversation should ideally be with your GP or another qualified medical professional.
If you decide to explore private treatment, we can point you towards established providers with a good reputation. Always make sure you receive a proper medical consultation and that any prescription is dispensed by a registered UK pharmacy.
Retatrutide is different. It is not currently approved for use in the UK outside authorised clinical trials, so products being sold as retatrutide should be avoided.
What can we do as your gym?
We cannot prescribe medication, recommend dosages or decide whether a particular treatment is suitable for you. What we can do is listen without judgement and share our own experiences, and of those we know who are using these products.
We can help you build a sensible training routine, focus on strength and fitness, manage changes in energy and recovery, and develop habits that support your results.
You do not need to hide the fact that you are using weight loss medication. Knowing about it can help your trainer understand changes in your appetite, energy, recovery and performance.
No judgement. No lectures. Just ask us for advice and we will help wherever we properly can.
The bottom line
Weight loss medication is not cheating. It is also not magic.
Used appropriately, and alongside regular exercise, good nutrition and a healthy attitude towards weight loss, it can be a powerful tool.
For me, Mounjaro and personal training helped me lose 45 lb over 18 months. More importantly, the combination helped me become fitter, stronger and more confident.
If you are using weight loss medication, considering it or simply have questions, come and speak to us. This conversation is already happening and, as gym providers, we have an obligation to be part of it.
